Till the bitter end..... by Damen Jackson

And yes, bitter is very much how I would describe it. I've probably been to over 50 games at Wrigley over the years, but never an Opening Day. So when the timing and opportunity allowed this year, well....I couldn't say no. And then the rain started. And stopped. And started. And stopped.

And in between extended rain delays, I was treated to a game that I fear doesn't ultimately summarize the 2008 Cubs. In losing 4-3 to the Brewers, the Cubs showed all the good and bad that many have thought we might see. Soriano seeing a few to many breaking balls in the 2-hole to be as effective. Kerry Wood ineffective in the 9th, and if my video and stills are right, mostly due to not being warmed up. But on the bright side, we had a spotless Zambrano battling Ben Sheets pitch for pitch through 7, and proving that he is very much the aces he proclaims to be. And Fukudome, who had a three hit day, including a fantastic 3-run homer to tied the game in the 9th. Make no mistake. He is the real deal.

Well, I'm rain-soaked and cold, much like all the players. I'm off to find some warmth, and a few late games on TV. As for the Cubs? They're back at it again Wednesday (1:20 CDT). I'm sure you'll read all sorts of bad press till then, but don't worry. For now. The Cubs ran up against a true ace, and sometimes it's like that.

Till Wednesday. And by the way. Check out the media galleries for photos and videos of todays game.
